Customer Reviews

Excellent QualityThese pants are very comfortable and made of a very sturdy material. A common problem with tactical pant's is the poor stitching and common problem of tearing right at the crotch area. I have ran these through the gauntlet and they have not had one tear or fraying at all. There are plenty of utility pockets for storing stuff (although I should mention the thigh cargo pocket is a little small compared to most). I ordered these in 38x30 but they seem a little longer, I've found myself having to roll up the bottoms sometimes depending on what boot I'm wearing. Other than that, these a great pant's for anyone doing any outdoor activities or for anyone that plays airsoft or paintball. 5Just what the Captain ordered. After extensive testing we love these BDUs. We're former military officers who think these low-key black BDUs are great. They retain military standards but have been upgraded to fit our current needs. They fit well and are built for superior endurance. One niggling complaint: the shipping charge is much higher than the UPS cost of shipping these in an envelope. So, 4.5 stars.8/26/10 UPDATE: We'd now give these 5+ STARS. We use these BDU's daily for field work. We've owned our first black pairs of these BDUs for over a year and have reordered a few times. COMMENTS: [1] Management responded to our comment after our second order about high shipping cost by slashing shipping charges by ~half. [2]The left front quad pocket is perfect size for a military spec Brute cell phone with direct connect allowing for hands free communication with the OEM telephone ear bud. [3] The heavy duty 2" black nylon web belt that we've received with these BDU's is a great bonus. [4] Have worn these on 100+ degree days in full sun while working. They are black. They are hot under these conditions, but no more so than a standard pair of unfaded Levi's and are more functional. [5] The fabric these BDUs are made of is top grade. If turned inside out when washing, they come out of the dryer looking pressed and seem to be wrinkle proof and highly fade resistant. They also shed water, lint, stains and most brush and thorns as if they were made of iron, yet are as comfortable as a favorite old pair of jeans and provide a greater range of motion. 5Top notch tactical/utility/cargo pantLike most of you, if you are reading reviews for these pants, I am always on the hunt for that perfect pair of practical (or cargo, or tactical, as you prefer) pants. I am not military or law enforcement, and I don't really want to look like a Wannabee - but I do engage in practical activities that require a good pair of practical pants. I'm a competitive shooter (mostly IDPA) and need pants that can hold and stow a lot of gear for a long day at the range. I also need them to be strong and durable, comfortable, and to allow good freedom of movement. And yeah, I will also wear them all weekend long too, or on trips around town. There are a few key brand names in the Tactical Pants business. 5.11 is one, perhaps the most popular or well known. It is difficult to discuss the attributes of a pair of Tac pants without making the obvious comparisons to 5.11. Add to that - this pant is designed VERY SIMILAR in many aspects to the 5.11 Tactical pants. Therefore, it is almost necessary to compare them side-by-side.If you don't want to read all the way through - here's the cut to the chase: I like them very much and have purchased more than one pair. Now, here's why:- Quality of finish and materials is top notch. There are no loose threads, no crooked seams, no dropped stiches. Good stuff all around.- Rip-stop material is light but incredibly strong. You will get a lot of wear from these pants before they hit the rag pile. They also feel very breathable, unlike a typical synthetic feel. This could just be because they are lightweight, but it works.- Sizing is very accurate. One important note however - the sizing is a very true sizing, not vanity sizing. I have several 5.11 pants in 32 waist and they are much looser than these Propper pants are at the waist. That is good and bad... it's okay if you really do know and order your real size, but not if you rely on the "extra" that most clothing makers give these days. That said, I would like a wee little bit of relaxation to the waist. The expandable elastic waistband is a bit rough on the skin. This is in part due to the synthetic material (opposed to soft cotton), but worn snug they will leave some red marks.- The Propper pants are almost a carbon copy of the 5.11 design, but for a few key and very notable exceptions:--- Rear pockets are not as low cut as 5.11, but run straight across at the back--- Inside the rear pockets (which are large and roomy) there is a second pocket that is "regular sized" and perfect for a wallet. This is a HUGE plus for me, because I hate my wallet rolling around inside the 5.11 pants and landing in all sorts of uncomfortable spots. The wallet stays put right where it should be in the Proppers - whether you are a right or left cheek kinda guy... they are both there.--- The front right pocket has a watch pocket as well as a small inner sub-pocket at the bottom. Both good to have. The left has neither and is just a normal pocket. Front pockets are well cut with a good angle, allowing easy in/out access for your hand - even if you're holding something in your hand...--- Fewer belt loops on Propper than on 5.11, and differently spaced.--- Less material in the crotch area on Propper than on 5.11. If you do significant crouching activities, you may notice the difference.--- The fly is shorter on the Propper, maybe by 1/2" or more overall. This does have an ergonomic impact gentlemen (I prefer the 5.11 one).- Things that are same/similar to 5.11 Tactical Pro:--- The lower edges of the pocket stitching is reinforced for a knife or flashlight clip or similar. This should help prevent premature wear from metal clips. (front pockets only on Propper, 5.11 has it also on rears)--- Left side small cargo pocket, perfect for most cell phones, flashlight, magazine, etc. Basically identical to 5.11--- Right appendix D-ring on belt loop--- Similar material weight and construction. Rip-stop synthetic blend.- Miscellaneous comparisons (in no particular order):-- 5.11 is overall more comfortable right off the bat, but Propper is cleaner looking and "dressier".-- Propper has much less "droopy flat butt" look than 5.11. Trade is comfort and flex versus ego and appearance. Your significant other will tell you that you look better in the Propper pants. :-)-- Propper includes a nice duty-style belt in the matching color of your pants. That's nothing to sneeze at, because even a cheap duty belt is $20 or more. The belt is great quality, but is a bit longer than it needs to be. A great added value.Overall, I don't want to give an opinion about one versus the other. I think the comparison is important, whether you're trying to decide between the two brands for a first purchase, or if you're familiar with 5.11 already. In the final analysis - I like these Propper Tactical Lightweight pants, and will order more. I have the gray - which is much darker than the photo here shows. Khaki would probably be my next choice, since summer is coming soon! Propper is about $10 less than 5.11, as of this writing. Consider the included belt, and that is a great value. I think you owe it to yourself to give them a try! 5Sloppy!I have worn Propper brand for a long time. I like the 65/35 blend tac pants. The material holds up and the pocket design is great. I just purchased five more pair. I m not sure what has happened, however after sitting in a patrol car for an hour, when I get out, the front of the pant is so wrinkled it s embarrassing. I have always prided myself on a professional look. If Propper can t offer some resolution, I will need to change brands. For now I offer it only one star. Do your research before buying these. 1First ImpressionHad a pair of Rothco pants that split, had to order something on the fly low cost to replace fast.First Impression:Feel highly durable, the water/soil resistance claim seems plausible. The inside of the pockets feel like they might be reinforced. Belt loops are wider than an average pair of pants.Feels strange to have pockets inside of pockets, but I expect to use most of them. My budget smartphone fit in the cell pocket perfectly.I have a spiffy pocket knife with an LED light on the side, it doesn't fit as well as I'd like, but its probably great for a standard pocket knife. Securing pen lights aren't super easy, but depends on the penlight. Shorter lights fit better/don't stick out so uncomfortably far.Cargo pockets and back pockets are velcro closures.Zipper has a cloth "Propper" attachment, reducing the need to hunt and dig and jab a chink of metal under your fingers for those precious few restroom opportunities.Button is a snapping closure.Overall comfort level is very high. I didn't want to take them off.If you're a woman looking for a low cost pair of men's EMS pants because the women's styles are somewhere between meh, not enough pockets, or comparitively pricy, then I recommend these. Size is on par expected fit as compared to Wrangler cargo pants. Will update after these see some use. 5Very disappointed.Once I received the item, I was going to try them on when I noticed the zipper had just fell apart when I went to pull it up. Poor quality in that area. It may have just been a defective zipper but that should have been caught during inspection. ALSO- when I went to reorder another pair, I noticed in a matter of three days the price went from $39 to $49, almost over night. That is rediculous! Clearly this seller does not respect the consumer by jacking the price up by $10 over night. Very unfortunate. 2Needs better quality controlI really want to like these pants. They are very sturdy and the stitching is well done, but overall quality control is terrible. If you order a 36 waist you might get a 36 waist - or you might get something closer to a 38 or a 34 waist. The back pockets are *really* deep to store all of your tacticool stuff in I guess. There are smaller pockets sewn inside the back pockets to hold a wallet, unfortunately more than half the time they are sewn too small to hold anything other than a money clip. When everything works they are the best tactical pants on the market (wish they came in as many colors as the lightweight version), but you have to buy an average of three pair to find one pair that has everything as it should be. That makes for some very expensive pants. 2Awesome tac pants!I think I found THE ONE! This tactical pant is amazing.I am a big guy and the 44x30 size is perfect for me. It is a little too baggy around the thighs and the crotch is longer than I would like but they are super comfortable and I still love them. I wore them on a 10 day road trip, hiked all day in them in wet and muddy trails of Oregon and Washington. I even wore them in the rain and they didn't get drenched unlike the rest of my wardrobe. Plenty of pockets for me to stuff my camera batteries, pocket knives, gum, etc. They are perfect for a photog like me who needs to run and gun with stuff reliably and be comfy all day in a pair pf pants that look pretty neat even if you have to go out to a bar! 4Excellent for wind-cutting and concealed carry.Apparently Propper uses three weights of cloth in their pants. This appears to be the heaviest. I live at 10,000' in the Rockies with frequent wind. This material does a superb job of keeping to wind away. A pair of thermals and on a -10F windchill day these are completely comfortable. Also, Proper doesn't put side belt loops of their tactical pants making a side-carry holster easier than other brand names that have them.Excellent value and, after having used the first pair for over a year, I can say they are durable in the extreme. 5Propper has dropped the ball on quality. Quality is not where they started.I started purchasing Propper pants a couple of years ago. The light weight ones I use to get had pocket guards, really well done reinforced stitching and even came with a belt. The new ones are not done to the same level of standards as the old ones, and they cost more now.I bought the heavier weight canvas ones you see here. They suffer from the same issues. The stitching is done very poorly and the reinforced edge guards for the clip on your flash light and or pocket knife. Well, they are useless.Propper must have changed manufacturers to save money on these pants. Looks like I will be going back and trying to find another brand that can keep quality consistent.By the way. I sent the lite weight ones back in for an exchange before I sent them back for good. Hoping that it was a fluke pair of poorly made ones. It was not. The quality has really dropped on these pants from just 2 years ago. I will not purchase them again. 2
