Customer Reviews

Industry Leading Manufacturer, Leading Effective Design for Tent and Tarp StakesThe indisputable leader in tent stakes in a 6 pc pack at a good price.Of course, MSR's MINI Groundhog Stake takes the lead whenever I use a simple bivy or small tarp instead of something larger requiring a more secure hold against the wind and movements inside. The "twist" or "curl" of the vanes of this "Y" stake give greater purchase over the ordinary "Y" design, which itself is much better than the "V" and it better than the simple Shepherd's Hook "J" shape. The length of the Groundhog extends that purchase in the soil (compared to its little brother the Mini Groundhog.Fit and finish is smooth, so cords are not likely to fray fastened about the neck of the stake. 5These stakes stay in the ground VERY well...perhaps too well. They also break relatively easily. These stakes stay in the ground VERY well...perhaps too well. There have been many times where I've struggled to get these out of the ground when packing up my tent. I've literally had to dig and dig and pull with myriad tools to get them out sometimes. I've also broken about five of them, which isn't great. Also, the string used to pull them out of the ground breaks very easily. If you want stakes that will stay in the ground, these are a decent buy. I've decided to not use them in especially rocky ground, because it is very difficult to remove them. I will now only use them in soft forest ground. They are too expensive to have them break and leave them behind in the ground because they cannot be removed. 3Roots of the EarthGather 'round kids, I'm gonna tell you a story...I bought 2 packs of these stakes to hold down a Columbia Cougar Flats II (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002Q3LICS/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00) tent in clay soil during Element11 (Utah's regional Burning Man event). My fellow Burners gawked and mocked, brandishing their rebar stakes, custom claws and heavy ropes."Those things are toothpicks!""The first good wind will pluck those from the ground and let your tent fly!"I'd done my research and I'm no novice... I hate carrying around 50 pounds of steel where a few ounces of well-made metal will do.The tent went up in a good wind, the stakes holding it fast. A couple of days later we got pounded with a Severe Thunderstorm of legend! 60 mph sustained winds with gusts well over 75 mph. Torrential rain saturated the ground putting a good couple inches under the tent's footprint (A "Dry Top" tarp - perfect! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00310QPSM/ref=oh_details_o02_s01_i01). I watched many a dome tent become a kite, Yurts imploded and flew to Oz, hippies were carried away with their drums and their didgeridoos! All the while, the tent held, the stakes never coming loose. A few of them were even completely submerged in the lake forming around my tent. When we finally left it took some effort with a hammer to pry them from the ground.Let no one mock you with these...they are worth every penny. 5My new favorite stakes.I camp mostly in the Piedmont and mountain regions of NC where underfoot conditions are soft. I bought these to replace the aluminum shepherds hooks that are frustratingly bendy and some no-name Y-stakes that were poorly made.1st, these are well deburred before getting a hard anodized finish. I expect these to last a very long time unless I have to hammer on them (these aren't stakes for hard ground).2nd, the necessary pull-loops are made from reflective line, and are handy for using as pulleys for tarp lines. Here's how to do that:Run the free end of your tarp line through the stake loop and use it like a pulley to tension the line. When you've got the tension you want, pinch the stake loop with your off hand, and use your dominant hand to tie a slippery half-hitch at the stake loop. Done. You can't do this with shepherd's hooks because the diameter of the hook is too large.3rd, I do have a few shock cord lines with little clips on the ends that were too small to clip around aluminum pegs, but they clip nicely to the stake loops. These stakes don't come with a stake bag, which is a drawback for me. Rather than use an old stake bag, I tied a foot of shock cord to one of the stake loops (and put a loop in the other end). A few winds around the stake bundle and the loop around a stake, and these hold together nicely. 5Great stakes. I see a few negative reviews saying ...Great stakes. I see a few negative reviews saying things like "they bent". Well, were you trying to drive them into granite using a sledgehammer? These are quite sturdy for their weight. I admit there was a time when I thought the proper method of staking a shelter was to stick a peg in each corner ring and take a hammer to it until it was sunk in, whether it hit a root or a rock or a buried titanium submarine hull. Then I started backpacking and wondered how people possibly used skinny little ultralight hooks and such when I was bending my giant steel coleman nail-stakes left and right, I did a little research and suddenly it made so much sense. Pounding is NOT how to do it, unless you want to replace a stake or three every trip (or get real lucky with lots of soft dirt). Even railroad spikes bend with sufficient force, there is no stake that will stand up to unlimited pounding if it hits something hard enough. These will take more of a beating than many stakes of similar weight (and have great holding power as well), but you need to understand the limits of any gear before whaling on it with a rock. These stakes are an excellent trade off between weight, durability and holding power, just leave the hammer at home when you camp with them. 5The MSR Groundhog is probably the best tent stake I've usedThe MSR Groundhog is probably the best tent stake I've used. MSR makes very good products in general but this is one of their gems for sure.Compact, lightweight (within reason, unless you're ultra-lighting maybe, but even if you are the strength to weight is mostly worth it anyway), strong, easily view-able in low-light which is an undervalued feature. This is a very difficult design to improve on from what I can tell. Maybe some new colors someday? If you've never used these but are considering a reliable tent stake that can take the hits for years and come back for more, look no further than the MSR Groundhog. I own at east 3 sets of these for different pieces of equipment. 54 Stars - One slight design flaw.Very good, could be slightly better.Pros:1. Made of a very lightweight aluminum alloy.2. Strong enough to stay straight when you're pounding them and they hit an underground rock.3. The shape secures the stake is stable in a wide variety of terrains.4. The paracord loops are strong and reliable.Cons:1. The tip of the stakes do blunt a little when they hit underground rocks.2. The notches on the top of the stake are straight, not hooked - so guylines are slightly less secure.Overall: These stakes live up to MSR's strong reputation. Extremely light for backpackers, and very effective in all terrains. However, MSR should have hooked (not straight) notches at the top. 4Stay in the ground better than other stakes, and more durableI purchased these for my backpacking tent which I use at least once a month (if not more).Pros:-Design allows the stake to stay in the ground more securely than the "L" shaped stakes that are cheaper-Even if you happen to hit a rock under the surface while driving the stake into the ground, these do not bend or get warped like happens for cheaper stakes-Color makes it easy to find on the ground-Anodizing doesn't get worn off through repeated use as quickly as with other stakesCons:-A bit more expensive, which may be a turn-off for some. I personally think the cost is worth it. 5Limited UtilityI used these camping in a forest clearing last night. The ground was pretty soft. These stakes were too short to hold the ground well. I can see that they maybe useful in different circumstance, like hard pack soil or rocky terrain. But for 90% of where I choose to pitch they won't work very well. I may carry them just incase I find myself in that kind of situation, but only if I am car camping and don't care about the extra weight.I'd up my rating if the seller here simply explained that they are not general purpose tent stakes. 3Works great in our packsGot 4 sets of these, one set per person, to have in their camp bags. We all went camping over the weekend, with the nasty weather, our areas had to be taken down during the day and put up again at night. Minimalist camping because it was two tarps and timber bed frames. These held down the 'roof' and worked great in stashing them away in the pouch our tarp came in. They are hardly noticeable as additional weight in our gear.. short of the lid for our nesting cup, these are the next lightest item we have! They have stood up wonderfully against a 12 yr old pitching a fit and stomping these into the ground without care. A Husband that doesn't know his own strength has buried these into the ground not realizing he did and a truck driver that has a little more umph behind him that the stakes almost bury themselves. The ground is a mixed area of sandy and clay (depending on the patch you set up on) and the stakes did not bend or break like cheap metal stakes or plastic stakes have done. They have kept our tarps down when gusts got to 15 mph and didn't pull free at any point. 5
