Customer Reviews

Probably a must for kid's bicyclesI'm 49 and have been using Mr. Tuffy since I was riding Skyway BMX bikes back in the early 80s. They're simply great and easy to use and easy to install. And they don't breakdown either. It's a one-time purchase. About the only thing you need to do is remove them, wipe them clean anytime you swap tires and/or tubes. As with any technology and materials, I'm sure Mr. Tuffy is slightly thinner, lighter but stronger since the ones I first used in my BMX bike 35+ years ago. For moms and dads, I strongly look into buying either thorn-resistance tubes or Mr. Tuffy tire liners for your kids bikes....especially once your kids reach 8-10 years old and start exploring farther and farther on their bikes (and start heading off the pavement). These will get many more miles, days and weeks and months between possible flats and punctures. When you're dealing with thin rubber inflatable bicycle tubes (and everything you can do on a bicycle), nothing is going to be absolutely 100% proof, but putting a little protection between the tire and tube (as well as some additional protection between the tube and rim) will keep you and your kids rolling alot longer. My boys have 24" bikes. I purchased the blue color (based on width of tire). The width is perfect but the blue 26" size was obviously too long. I simply install to make sure the tire liner is fully against the inner tire wall, then trim/cut the tire liner so that there is only about 1-2" of overlap. Easy but always measure 2-3x and cut once! 5Best idea ever!!!!Trust me. Coming from someone who would get at least a flat per week?!? These Things are a life saver! I haven t had a flat since!Because I bike a lot, I feel like I could tell the weight difference a bit but maybe it was just my mind. I feel like I had to use 10% more effort in my rides. They take some time to install because it s kind of slippery as far as getting everything lined up. I love these so much I got my roommate some for Christmas because he had been experiencing flats too.The only other thing I would say is going over bumps feel/sound different. Hard to explain but it sounds like you hit a hard pad of something and changes the feel of the bike. It s something I got used to though and it s not a huge deal.Just get these already lol!!! I think they make a lightweight version. I would have wanted those instead but already spent my money haha. Oh well. 5Buy it!!!!I used this Tuffy tire liners for my 1000 mile bike trip from Saigon to Hanoi in Vietnam. The nice thing is these liners are pretty light and I can use them with my favorite tires Continental GP4000s II. Before the trips I was debating whether to use:1) Continental GP4000s II. I love these tires. They are light and ride nicely and pretty good in wet weather2) Continental Gatorskin hardshell. These are heavier than the Continental GP4000s II and the liner. They don't ride nice and not as good in the rain as the GP4000s II.3) Schwalbe Marathon. I used these before in my two previous trips in Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. They are heavier though, but pretty puncture resistant. At the end I settled on the Continental GP4000s II and the liners. No puncture at all for the whole trip. It was raining for three days straights and no problem. They also are pretty light. 5Seems good but falls flat, on the first ride...More or less a tire patch that goes around the whole tire. Great concept, right?Well, not so much.1. They are very hard to center and put on. If it s not centered and isn t riding under the tire but inside up one of the sides, what is the point?2. Once you do get it centered with the tube, now you have to get it on the rim without it or the partially inflated tube falling off. A little adhesive would go a long way here.3. There was a small section I couldn t get to sit right no matter how much i fussed. Fix one area, another moves off center a bit. Fine i thought, 90% coverage is better than nothing.4. 6 miles into my first ride with a brand new slime tube, i get a flat after making a hard turn on a left hand turn on road. After inspection, it looks like this product sliced it as it wasn t centered on that piece.I really really wanted this to work well, but it ended up causing what it s supposed to prevent. The liner really needs to be a bit wider as well as come with a light adhesive to keep it in the correct spot. Due to the spiral folded creases in it from packaging, it naturally doesn t lay in the tire very well. 1Great at preventing constant flat tiresI am a road cyclist and use these in all of my bikes. I started using them a year ago. I don't notice any difference in performance of my tires, but then again I cycle as a hobby and I'm definitely not a pro by any means. Since I started using Tuffy lines, I haven't had a flat tire. I actually went so long without a flat that I had to replace my rear tube because the valve went bad. I also was able to ride on a tire with cuts/slashes and not get a single flat. Perhaps I was pushing my luck, but these things worked. They are easy to install and you can do it yourself. I use size 25 Continental 4000 s2 tires on Enve wheels. My friends that ride tubeless or without tuffy liners are always making fun of me and my liners, but I haven't been on the side of the road (in the rain) fixing a flat since I started using these. 5Stops some.I got this for my RadRover. I had been getting a lot of goat heads on the road side going to work. This got irritating as it would mess with my commute. So, I got these in hopes of stopping the trend. Within a week I got a flat. The main difference was that this flat was pinhole in size. Took hours to drain. Still was a pain. But, that pinhole patched pretty easily. Which was not true for earlier punctures. I think fat tires are just hard to patch in general because they have a lot of stretch to them when they inflate.Second time I got a goat head with these in it did stop the thing. I was very happy with that. That one was not fully dry yet. It was strong enough to go through my tire completely but the liner bent the thorn. I could see this once I pulled it out. They are not perfect. They will not stop need-like punctures. I think they are probably better for larger punctures.Installation is a bit tricky. You just have to try it. Best to use a partially inflated inner tube when you do it. Helps hold it in place. 4Impressively simple and effective product. These things are tough as hell. A friend of mine ran over a piece of glass that destroyed his tire and even punctured the tuffy, but the tuffy took enough force that the slime tube was able to stop the leak. I swear, that chunk of glass would have cut through the rim without the tuffy.Installation can be tricky, depending on how long your particular set has been rolled up. Once you get it unrolled and the tube in place it s pretty easy.Couple these with slime tubes and (unless you run over broken dinner plates) you ll never have another flat. 4These tire liners will pay for themselves!I bought the Mr. Tuffy Bicycle Tire Liner for my Giant Defy Advanced after being frustrated with flats. Out in the High Deserts of Southern California, small thorns called Goatheads are everywhere and a menace for road bikes. I was averaging one flat tire every alternate ride before I got absolutely frustrated and started looking for solutions. Since I ordered these tire liners, I have managed 500 miles before getting my first flat. So, all-in-all, a great purchase.Installing these tire liners is not too bad and can be done for both wheels in about 30 minutes. They work fine in most instances and significantly reduce flats. However, they are not magic barriers and do not eliminate flats completely. A big nail or a thorn will go through. Still, based on the number of flats I'd get before and the associated cost of replacement tubes, these have paid for themselves in the last two months. I'd recommend these for all road bike owners. 4... kept getting flat tires due to the beat up dirty city side walks filled with who knows whatI commute to work on the daily and kept getting flat tires due to the beat up dirty city side walks filled with who knows what. Glass, thorns, nails, screws, etc. I stalled these as well as thorn-resistant tubes, yet I know that kinda rediculous but hey I'm not trying to get another flat again. Well the other day, I ran over by accident broken remains of a beer bottle and I hear a rip in my back tire. I checked out my bike and the glass made a hole in the rubber of my tire but never penetrated through the rim tape. So good job Tuffy! I'm so glad I make this purchase. 5No flats in 6000 miles but lots of tire puncturesWhile the following review was for the normal weight liners I haven't had a flat on the Ultra Lites either. Will update a mileage increases. So far, so good. Rode the Cross Florida (167 miles) twice with no flats, but honestly the tires looked very good afterwards so I'm not sure the liners got tested. Will update as mileage increases.Update: 1230 miles without a problem. I did get a pinch flat from hitting something on the road but the holes (yes 2!) were caused by the spoke holes through the rim tape. I had seen a fairly good cut in the tire earlier and when I checked the Mr. Tuffy liner I could see where something had poked it and deformed it but no hole in the liner or tube so that was clearly a flat I didn't get because of the liner. I'm removing the tires and tubes this week (6-22) for a thorough inspection and will update after.Update: 2200 miles, still no flats. Rear tire wore and while I replacing it, I found a piece of stainless wire stuck in the Mr. Tuffy liner (photo) but it didn't penetrate.Update over 6000 miles. Still no flats with several sets of tires. Last change had 3 visible holes through the tire including a large one caused by a piece of glass (2 photos). Nothing made it through the liner. 5
