Customer Reviews

Perfect for intermittent PNW rainsNote: In the last 4 years, I've gone through the Columbia's Watertight II (~$45) and Paradox Rain Jacket(~$40) (both from amazon), which are both excellent value rain jackets given their quality and price.Pros:-Fit. I'm a lanky 6'2"/170lbs and I ordered a Large, for the length. The torso is a perfect fit (neither loose nor excessively baggy) and accommodates a layer underneath. The arms are a great length.-Quality. Well-build zippers, velcro cuffs, sturdy button clasp, and waterproofing has withstood many commutes and camping trips in the rain and through brush without showing signs of wear and tear nor interior disintegration. So far, seems more durable than the other two jackets I owned.-Design. It is a lightweight shell, not intended to be insulation. The rain and the sun can appear on the same day here in the PNW and the jacket can be worn for both thanks to the pit zippers and the ability to tuck the hood under the tall collar. Can be worn 24/7!Cons:-Button clasp sticks when quickly pulling apart the velcro but needs to be clasped because it will click together if left undone.-The tall collar took some getting used to.-The material is noisy when crumpled.Overall a great choice for a mid-price rain jacket and the extra features and option if you want to upgrade from the lowest-price jackets. 5Awesome windbreaker that happens to repel waterFirst things first: this is just a rain shell. If you are looking for a jacket that offers any real insulating value, you need to keep looking. That said, if what you want is something inexpensive that breaks the wind, sheds the water, and breathes well, look no further. I have tested this Marmot in several Oregon rainstorms without getting a drop inside. The fit is designed for people with a pretty average build. For me, the chest and shoulders are a little more snug than I'd like, but if I trade up to an XL the waist will be way too baggy and the arms will be too long. It's acceptable, but if you are a weightlifter you will not be able to fit a thick sweater or fleece under this and still be happy with the fit.Construction is a mixed bag. You can't expect much at this price point, and everything works pretty well. Some details aren't confidence inspiring though. The snap at the bottom is too sturdy; I keep expecting the jacket to tear when I open it. The fasteners for the hood drawstring are too tiny and weak; I keep expecting them to break off in my hands, and even if they don't they are hard to manipulate even with bare fingers, much less with gloves. 4As good as it getsAbsolute best value out there. I've been wearing this thing (with the full zip version of the pants) as a rain suit over the last 6-8 weeks in North Georgia (this area has had >13" of rain in December). I've been essentially dry. What I mean by that, is that it's also been warm, so you have a choice, wet from rain, wet from sweat. I have spent hundreds on GoreTex, only to arrive at the truth that it's a laboratory thing - sure it works, and its great for things like sleeping bags, but I've just not gotten good results out in the real world, at least not in the Southeast. That stuff probably does work above 10K Feet, or in 10% humidity...we just don't have much of that around here. What DOES work are pit zips, which I will not do without. As a lightweight waterproof shell, equipped with pit zips, cut so that you can actually move without pulling the surface all over, the Precip is about as good as you will likely find IMHO. 5Men's Marmot Precip Jacket and PantsI'm a full time traveler and will be in the Pacific Northwest for the next few months during the rainy season. I love the outdoors and didn't want to let the rain stop me from getting outside. Searching for a decent rain jacket that will keep me dry has become a slight obsession. After visiting a handful of brick and mortar stores as well as reading a ton of Amazon reviews, I settled on getting the Marmot Precip jacket and matching pants. The price tag fit somewhere between the high-end gear like the Outdoor Research Foray and the inexpensive 20 MM PVC Coleman rain suit. The Precip hit that price point where I felt like I was getting a quality product at a reasonable price. The shipping was fast and I received the the jacket and pants within two days of ordering them. I opened the package and discovered the material did not meet my expectations or compare to the jackets that are slightly more expensive. There are two layers to the jacket. Although the outer layer material is described as rip-stop nylon, it was not as thick as other rip-stop material i ve purchased in the past. I believe it will most likely rip the first time you encounter a branch or scrape it along a rock. The inside layer of the jacket feels very similar to the thin plastic table covers you can get at the dollar store. The jacket is fitted with all YKK zippers, which in my experience has been great quality, however these are not waterproof like I've seen in other jackets. There is a flap of fabric that covers it to keep the rain off.I'm 5' 9", about 170 pounds, and wear a size 33 waist. After reviewing the Marmot sizing guide on their website I ordered a size large in both the jacket and pants. Even with a thick fleece on the jacket is way too big and the pants are pretty long.I believe this is a decent jacket that you can keep in your backpack when you don t expect it to rain. It s lightweight and stuffs into its own pocket. I ended up returning it because I don't trust that this jacket will keep me dry in the rains of the PNW. I'm not sure which jacket I'll try next, but was overall disappointed this jacket didn't work out. I really thought it would be the one to keep me warm and dry. 2Poorly made product, even worse customer serviceLove it. Keeps me warm and dry in the wind and rain! Fits perfectly.edit: After a year of wearing it, the inner lining started coming off. When I took it off, I would be covered in little white specks from the lining. It has gotten to the point where more lining ends up on me than still on the jacket. I've contact marmot 4 times because of the supposed "lifetime warranty" on it when I bought it. However, all of the info about warranties on their website has changed, no longer giving lifetime warranties and I have not gotten a response from them once. I would NOT recommend this jacket. Instead spend a little more money on something from NorthFace or Black Diamond. Their customer service is excellent and they stand behind their products. They will replace something no questions asked once it falls apart. Unlike Marmot who doesn't even give a customers question the dignity of a respons 1Think About SizingMy husband is 6'1" and weighs 195-200 pounds. He wears a large tee shirt, and prefers an XL dress or flannel shirt. He wanted a waterproof shell to wear when walking the dog. We went with this one because it was one of the few that claimed to be waterproof, not just water resistant. We went with a 2XL because he wanted to be able to layer insulating shirts/vests under the shell, and he was more concerned with functionality than with a slim, stylish silhouette. This is a great shell that fits well. It's full enough in the torso to allow easy movement and as many layers as he needs, and the sleeves cover his wrists -- usually, his wrists "stick out." The shoulder seams run right along his shoulders, and the shell is long enough to cover most of his butt. There is a draw string on the bottom of the jacket that allows him to cinch it as tightly as he wants, and while the pockets are very lightweight (probably not good for heavy wads of keys) they are adequate for stashing gloves or a wallet. The slate gray color is nice and neutral. This is a shell that can be worn in many situations. Well worth the extra $$. 5Not a Waterproof JacketWore it once in the rain. Water permeates through the material. My shirt was soaked after 20 minutes of walking. Fail. Unfortunately the seller says the return time expired. 1PreCip great value / Med. vs. LargeGreat value for the price. Light weight, packable, hood stashes in collar, breathable, pit zips nice for extra breathability. Feels sticky on bare arms, when wearing short sleeve shirt.Originally ordered large, too big, very full cut in body, I'll use in colder season if I need layers. Ordered med., much better, more fitted, sleeves perfect length. I can wear with a light fleece if needed, a little snug in the neck & forearm with fleece. For reference, I'm 5'9", 168 lbs., med/large shirt (16-34 dress shirt), 32 waist. 5Not breathable.I have a gore tex rain jacket from another vendor which is great but not for golfing. Marmot is a famous, respected brand and when I saw this jacket advertised as light weight, waterproof and BREATHABLE, I went for it--for golfing in wet weather.I'm considering sending it back because IT IS NOT BREATHABLE. My arms get clammy if I don't wear a long sleeve shirt under it--which defeats my purpose. I put the material on my lips and tried to blow my breath through the material and could not. My gore tex rain jacket, a much heavier jacket, does what gore tex claims--100% waterproof and doesn't make my skin clammy from sweating, because the jacket allows air through the material. This is the jacket for you if you don't mind clammy skin, but I can't handle it.I'm thinking of returning it and "upgrading to one like it, but with gore tex, if Marmot has such a thing. 3Great light rain jacketI normally wear 2xl sizes on all my jackets with no issue. But, this jacket tends to be a slim cut. I don't know much guys who are 2xl and slim at the same time so I don't know what gives. Also, muscular guys might have issues with the size as well if you have broad shoulders and thick arms which I also have. I wanted to be able to wear a fleece underneath for added layer but it makes the jacket a little too tight so minus a star. But, the product itself is great. Its light and breathable. I like the adjustable hood, my old north face rain jacket hood flops down over my face and have to always pull the hood up so its nice that I don't have to do it with this. This jacket packs very well inside the hood and fits nicely in my pack. This jacket is rated at the top by outdoor gear labs so its been tested and approved. A definite good buy if you have a medium to slim build. 4
