Customer Reviews

Better than a regular baseball capThere are already over 100 reviews for this hat, so why do I think another one is needed? You decide.I sweat profusely from the head when I run, and only from the head. My arm pits stay dry, but the sweat that streams down my back and drips from my chin never stops. Depending on the temperature and humidity, it can take anywhere from a mile to a half-marathon until my shirt and pants are completely soaked. Sweat does not get into my eyes, though, and this is something I have learned to deal with. I wear light-weight and fast-drying running clothes.I ran the Boston marathon in 1998 with a Red Sox baseball cap. The cap absorbed so much sweat that it became too heavy to carry by the time I passed Natick, and I had to throw it away. I have not run with a hat ever since. Next week I will be competing in my first triathlon. I am preparing for a hot and humid day, and there is no shade on the course. I decided that I needed a hat, not so much to deal with my sweat, but to protect myself from the sun. The problem was - I needed a hat that does not become dead weight once it gets soaked from my sweat. This cap seems to fit the bill. I ran with it this morning for about 4 miles. It was very humid and in the end sweat was dripping from the edge of the visor (!). Needless to say, the hat was completely soaked. It does get heavier, of course, but there is just not enough material for it to absorb too much sweat, so it still felt comfortably light on my head. I think I will wear this at the race next week.I am deducting a point because it does feel a bit smallish (as others have pointed out). I don't know my hat size, but I wear this one on the widest setting. It still feels a bit tight, and I would not be surprised if it causes me headache on a really long run.March 2015 Update: The cap has held up for not quite two years. I have come to use it regularly last winter with a scull cap underneath on very cold days, but mostly during early morning runs because it shields my eyes from the headlamp's stray light. The cap got washed with all my other gear after every use (Miele front loader on short cycle, never in the dryer). Now the edges around the plastic visor insert are showing some wear and will not last many more wash cycles. Still, nearly 2 years is more than I expected and I will get the same cap again, 4Performs better than more expensive hatsI really like this hat. My other hats are Nike and Asics, and I like the Headsweats one the best. I sweat a lot and run in DC in the summer when it is hot and humid. So no, this hat does not absorb all the sweat when it is 100 degrees and 80% humidity and I'm doing a long run, so sweat will occasionally run into my eyes. But no hat will completely wick all of the sweat in those conditions, and this hat performs the best of the ones I've tried. I also like that it fits deeply on my head. In comparison, my other hats feel like they are just sitting on top of my head. I am a woman, but apparently I have a fairly large head! Also great is that it doesn't have velcro. All of my other hats have velcro and they snag on my clothes in the wash. I bought the orange because at the time it was the cheapest color and I like wearing bright colors. I am definitely buying more of these so I never run out of clean hats. 5Perfect for keeping the sun off without causing you to sweatI have several of these Headsweats caps in different colors, and they're great, exactly what you need for protection in the sun. The bill keeps the sun off your face, and the material breathes, so you don't sweat more than you should and the sweat doesn't stay trapped under your cap.The shape actually fits your head, unlike so many baseball caps that look all strange and lumpy. I like to stick my ponytail out the back. Really, as caps go, this one is perfect. The price is also good. I've bought several, and this will continue to be my brand of choice for caps. 5Great product, butComfortable, light and functional. But, why do you need to stitch a scratchy label on the inside of the cap in contact with the wearer skin to irritate the wearer head?It has nice and artistic legible branding on the right side outside where anybody can see, but they still managed to put in a useless branding tag label on the inside of the cap, where no one but the wearer can read it to make the wearer spend time to rip the label off without damaging the cap. 1Plainer-Looking than SweatVacs, but Less Expensive TooI bought both the HeadSweats Race Hat and SweatVacs Race Hat at the same time so I could pit them against each other. I was a little skeptical about how well either could possibly work, but I am a heavy sweater, so I was desperate. Traditional cotton headbands soak up sweat to a point, but then they become saturated and stop working any further. And they do nothing to protect my eyes or the top of my head from the sun, which is important with the summer approaching. The HSRH is extremely light and well fitted. I did have to take up the adjustment strap at the back a little, but not much. The adjustment strap has a thin plastic buckle on it. I'm a little worried that it might be a failure point in the future, with temperature and humidity swings, and the general thinness of the plastic material. The SVRH's wide velcro strap (with reflectivity to boot) seems superior to me. But time will tell. The HSRH is very basic in appearance. It's basically monochromatic--just one color. There is a logo on the side, and there is a nice black undersurface beneath the long bill, but overall the HSRH looks a little plain and boring, if you care about that sort of thing. It really does come off as something intended from the ground up to be decorated with a promotional logo of some sort, to the point that it seems overly dependent on that sort of decoration, because without such, the hat just looks blah. (Maybe that's partially because I picked GRAY, which is one of the dullest colors known to man!)The SweatVacs model is visually more appealing. It's got reflectivity at the front and back, while the HeadSweats model does not. I picked up a SVRH with contrasting stitching, for just a little more pop, but this HSRH is all just one single color. The HeadSweats hat is also consistently cheaper, though. They keep it simple, and they keep the price down, comparatively speaking. That said, functionally, I am extremely impressed with the HSRH. It wicks moisture away from my forehead and sweaty hair very well. While it quickly feels wet in my hands when I take the hat off at a drink stop, it still feels lightweight, so it doesn't retain very much of the moisture that it absorbs. It really does transport the sweat from my skin outward into the air. I've had so many so-called wicking fabric garments fail to do that in humid southeast Texas, that this hat's fabric surprised me with its effectiveness. Coolmax kicks caboose.I rinse the hat off in the shower after every run, and then hand-wash it with detergent in the sink at the end of the week. Either way, it air dries in front of a floor fan in about 2 hours. My biggest gripe about both the HeadSweats and the SweatVacs Race Hats is the construction of the interior sweatbands: (1) They're both quite thin, which seems rinky-dink. Maybe that allows for better wicking, but coming from traditional stand-alone headbands, it seems chintzy in these hats. (2) The built-in headbands are sewn at the bottom, but open around the top of the bands, which allows them to flop down and outside of the hats. I often feel the sweatbands dangling down the front center of my forehead, and have to keep fiddling with them to stuff the headbands back up inside the hats. They should've been sewn in better by both manufacturers.Still, the hat works. Plain as it might look, it does what it's supposed to do, even in hot, humid, Texas. Gotta respect that!Because of the disparity in the looks department, I bought a lot more SweatVacs hats directly from their official website. I bought a few more HeadSweats too, but I opted for slightly fancier versions than their basic Race Hat in order to work around the plainness factor. The HeadSweats website also offers a decent discount as well.Overall, if I could, I'd rate the SweatVacs Race Hat 1/2-star ahead of the HeadSweats. They both work very well, but the SVRH looks a little better. 4Terrific in hot sunWas hesitant about buying a dark color for outdoor summer tennis but, surprisingly, the material quality is so marvelous it could be comfortable in any color. The breath ability and moisture wicking is the selling point. It has a built-in sweatband, thin top layer and very light weight fabric. Every family member, including the children (9&12) have one and those with less hair enjoy the protection it provides. It s not considered stylish but is a lifesaver in heat and humidity. 5My Favorite HatThis is by far my favorite hat I've had in years. I bought this initially to run in as it was advertised as lightweight and breathable. The hat works tremendously when running, but it quickly became my everyday hat. The material feels great on my head, it's not a heavy force weighing down on me, and it's plain and clean. Definitely a huge recommendation from me on this product if you are looking for a cheap yet amazing hat.5 Favorite Covered Stars out of 5! 5Great Buy: Marathon Runner ApprovedI love this hat! I lead an extremely active lifestyle. I run marathons, camp, hike, mountain bike, trail run, you name it! I wear this hat roughly 85% of the time I'm doing outdoor activities and it hasn't let me down.Pros: Extremely lightweight, and the lining feels like a towel and is super absorbant. Provides great shade and cover from the elements. Machine washable, comfortable, stays on the head very well.Cons: None. 5Did they change the band?Good...The colors stay true for a long time, I use mine every week and they still look great. The material is light and not TOO hot though I sometimes take it off to cool down. Comfy to wear for a long time, I can do a 4 hour hike in these with no problem.Bad...It seems they changed the band. See the picture, the orange one has a real terry band, the blue one only the inside is a thinner terry material. I run with these and sweat (a lot!). The blue one I can't use for running it is worthless for keeping the sweat out of my face. I'm not sure if all of them are like the blue one now, my orange one is older. With the better terry band these are great for me, but the thinner one just doesn't work. 3Great Running Hat - Retired my old Nike's!I still used my many Nike Dri-Fit running hats that were 12-15 years old when they made them to last with a much higher quality of the ones that are sold today. I tried one of Headsweats hats and love it. It's a bit lighter than the old Nike hats because of the field material and it breathes better than the Nike dri-fit material which is a big plus for the hot weather which I am faced with most of the year. I am not an individual to quickly switch to a new product especially one that I have used and liked for so many years but I after several months of using I have retired the Nike's and made the switch. I also purchased several more colors as has happy with the many choices! 5
