Richard the Lionheart (1157 - 1199) Richard Plantagenet is revered as one of the great warrior kings of England. Richard I was well known for his bravery which earned him the nickname "The Lionheart". A name that has reached epic and mythological proportions, best seen in literary works such as Robin Hood and Sir Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe. Richard the Lionheart used a single lion rampant in his first coat of arms, or perhaps two lions affronts, on his first seal, but later used three lions passant in his 1198 Great Seal of England, and thus established the lasting design of the Royal Arms of England. Lionheart died on April the 6th 1199. He was buried in the Fontvraud Abbey in Anjou France.
